Laundry
That leads us to the balcony that also serves as a washroom. We have brand new washers and dryers outside, exposed to the elements and insects. You can’t see it, but the washer is hooked up to a scrub sink. That is why it has to be on the edge of the balcony, getting rained on. The dryer’s exhaust tube is right there, but I don’t mind as I bought fabric softener sheets at the US commissary the other day and it makes the house smell like a home instead of a construction site. The main problem is that there is only one outlet so you have to wait for one machine, before starting another. Due to these being European machines they are extremely small, it takes almost 2 hours to wash 1 towel, two shirts, and some underwear. The other night it rained for several hours at a rate that I thought meant Hurricane Relief was coming our way and they were sitting in several inches of water. Luckily Hilda helps with the washing and ironing as I would not be able to keep up with the amount of dirty clothes we create.
